The Turkish artist Tayfun Erdogmus connects the past with the present, eastern with western art and nature with science. Always in association with scripture, he arranges flowers, leaves in lines, adds geometric shapes of paper and embeds these elements in several layers of translucent lacquer. He succeeds in communicating cross-cultural differences and similarities with the help of an abstract language, which preceded the confrontation with art, aesthetics, science, culture and history. Symbolically charged flowers like roses, tulips and daffodils are - due to this technique - purely formal elements; they become a means of narration, part of his personal style, far away from any decorative idea. The French term of nature morte is not approved here in image structure, but due to the use of dead material becomes re-evaluated.
During his 3-month DAAD scholarship stay here in Berlin between November 2009 and January 2010, Tayfun has produced a very delicate series of finely structured handmade papers in cooperation with the Künstlerhaus Bethanien.
